Act VII
Chapter 19: The Break
The next morning I woke up to find that she was gone. “Really lady really, did you really run off in the middle of the night. Geez, she must have a death wish or something, whatever she’s lucky I need her help.” I said talking to myself as I got up and stretched for a bit, I looked around to see which way had the best path for her to run along. “What! Where’s my carrier what the, did she steal it from me. Oh, I’m going to make her pay now, you’re going to regret this.” I said yelling out in anger.
Little did she know my carrier can only fly back to the city, or maybe that’s just what she wanted it to do. Either way it was headed to the city and I knew she couldn’t have left that long ago, and that she wouldn’t know how to fly it at full speed so I would be able to catch up to her.
Lucky thing I had a compass of sorts that pointed to the center of the city, allowing me to always know the fastest way to the city in case I had ever gotten separated from my carrier. Well, it wasn’t really all that lucky seeing that I had been carrying it around since I came to the city. The lucky part was it was in my pants pocket this time and not in my coat where I normally keep it. This would let me know the heading of the carrier seeing that it used the same compass to set its heading when it began flying back to the city. I flipped it open, and then found which direction I needed to go then I headed off as fast as I could, vanishing and repairing miles apart. Only stopping long enough to correct my path and I was off again within seconds.
It took me some time to catch up to her and by then I was completely exhausted. I was on the brick of falling over when I appeared on the carrier. “Man, I hate it when people run.” I said falling inside of the cockpit barely able to talk from how heavy I was breathing.
I took a few minutes to just sit and catch my breath, taking longer than I had expected to. I was more tired than I thought. As hard as my heart was beating I was glad that I wasn’t able to die. Which, come to think of it I didn’t fully understand how it was even possible. I mean there had to be some limit to what I could go through and what I couldn’t, my life must have an end at some point in time. “Why are you looking at me like that, you pervert, I’m not meat, and I’m too young for you.” I heard her voice interrupting my thoughts. It was then that I realized that I was gazing at her and I didn’t even know her name.
“So what’s you name you little thief, it better be a nice one for you calling me a pervert Missy.” I said to her before losing my breath once again. She just looked at me, as if she was trying to find a way to get away from me and not finding one. “Fine I’ll tell you my name, its Annabella, and I am not a little thief ok I didn’t try to steal this thing. It was just cold last night and I wanted a warm place to sleep so I got in here and when I work up it was in the air and heading somewhere it’s not my fault.” I just looked at her with a smile I was going to laugh, but I was too out of breathe to do that. I’m sure my smile didn’t help with the whole pervert thing, which for some reason I didn’t want her calling me.
“See, you’re a pervert stop looking at me like I’m just an object to please you.” Annabella yelled as she slapped me. “Look lady, I have a name you know, it’s Daniel and I am not a pervert so stop calling me that would you it’s not nice. The thing you are in right now is called a carrier and it took off because you took my coat in it. We are heading back to the forge city, it’s where this thing goes after I finish all my deliveries. Which reminds me, you’re going to help me find the people that makes this Shadow thing and you’re going to help me stop them you got that.” I said to her trying to sound very serious, which is a very hard thing to do when out of breath. Mostly I look like a fool, which I was guessing that’s why she just smiled at me. Then she pulled my coat around her tighter and leaned against me closing her eyes.
What on earth is with this lady I thought to myself as I took a few deep breaths. We should be getting to the city in a short while. I could speed up the carrier, but at the moment, I was tired after chasing this lady more than 200 miles. I honestly just wanted to take a nap for the rest of the day. Sadly, I couldn’t see that happening any time soon, I had to find a way to hide this crazy lady when I got to the city so that the people dealing the Shadow wouldn’t find out about her and hide.
I saw the city coming closer it was time to get started now, the carrier would be going in to land in just under two minutes and I would need to get her out of the carrier and hide her without anyone seeing her. Now would be when it got complicated; however, I had a plan to get her in unseen. There were vents that let out the smoke and hot air from the city’s engines and one of them was just under where the carrier would land. The best part was the one that the carriers landed above only let out hot air and not smoke, so that the carrier polite could still see.
I pushed the button to open the hatch above me. Annabella opened her eyes to my smile; I wrapped my hands around her and kicked at the stick in front of her sending the carrier into a barrel roll. I moved vanishing from the cockpit with her in my hands and appearing on the ground, then from there inside the large vent hole. “I need my coat and for you to wait here for me, I’ll be back for you soon ok, and I’ll bring you real clothes to.” I said to her then vanished with my coat, I was back in the carrier before it finished spinning.
I landed and go out, then headed over to get my new assignment, seeing that I was gone the whole night. I expected to have a few, but oddly enough there wasn’t any new ones. I didn’t mind because it just meant I would have to come up with a reason to go back and get her later. Which I already had a plan for, but it would just take her doing something I know she wouldn’t want to do at all. I waited and rested at home for about an hour, then I decided to go and get my plan started.
I watched as the sun was at its highest point in the skies, which meant most of the delivery men would be coming back and heading out at the same time. It was their busiest time of the day. It would make my plan so much easier to do. I headed to one of the tops of the buildings that I usually go to when I need to think. Then I descend down from there using a phantom step and heading to the edge of the city. Then from there I went over the side lunching off of one of the cities stabilizing wings straight to the ground, then to the vent before I could be seen by anyone.
“I’m going to need you to jump.” I said to her with a straight face.
She looked at me and laughed. “You’re a funny pervert; I’m not jumping from anything.” She said laughing at me. “But you have to, don’t worry, I will catch you before you fall too far. I’m going to be on the ground and I will need you to jump when I give you the signal.” I said back to her, she just looked at me angry and with her arms folded tightly. I knew she didn’t like any part of my plan, but it was the only plan that would work.
I headed back to top of the city, I looked all around, and then I jumped from the city edges. I landed on my feet with ease and looked around, there didn’t seem to be anyone watching me at the time, which was good. What I was about to try was just very, well I would say it was unsafe, but it passed that at this point what I wanted to try was just dumb. It would be the first time I would ever try to use the phantom style and change directions while using it. Normally I would just go straight or just change at a small angle but this time I was going to try and run along the bottom of the city and then around the side. I would actually have to make a full turn, which I never did before, and I honestly didn’t know if it was possible to change directions that much while doing it.
I took a deep breath and just let all my worries about what I was about to do go, I gave her the signal to jump and watch as she just laid back and fell from the huge opening. She fell back with her hands stretched out as if she was about to just turn over and fly away like a bird. I took my last deep breath as she reached the halfway point between the city and the ground. I dropped my head down and focused everything on what I was about to do. Time slowed for me and I opened my eyes for the first time when using a phantom step. The world stood still all around me; I looked up and saw her frozen in the air above me ready to be caught.
I moved with everything I had, my hands wrapped around her pulling her from the air, my feet made contact with the bottom of the city; I was moving along it then came the hard part. I turned up the side of the city, then turned again to head into the city. I appeared on top of one of the taller buildings stumbling to the edge with her in my hands. Then I vanished right as I was about to fall off the edge, luckily before anyone saw me. Four rooftops later, I appeared in front of my doorway and went in as quickly as I could. It would have been much easier if I had left the door opened or just cracked so I could walk straight in but I locked it out of habit.
I kicked the door shut behind me and put her down, I was a bit tired of carrying her, and she opened her eyes shocked. “You caught me, you really did, wow am I in your place?” She said as she sat up and looked around. “Yes, I caught you, did you really think I wouldn’t. Never mind, don’t answer that I know you didn’t think I would. Anyway, that’s not the point, it’s time you tell me who the person getting you this drug is.” I replied to her as I sat down in the chair next to her.
“Before I tell you anything I want to know what you did with the rest of the bottles, and you better not have thrown them away.” She demanded, I just laughed and pointed to the package on the table. “That’s all of them well I took one I need to know what’s in it in order to know what part of the city it was made in.” I said to her waiting for an answer to my first question.
“Ok, I will point him out to you.” She said, looking around my place. “Anyway, how are you going to find out where this came from, are you one of the scientists here, cause I was told that they don’t make deliveries.” She said as she walked around going through everything. “Well, I have been here a while and I do like to read, I have also been reading everything I could get my hands on while here, it gives me something to do on my devilries. After all, it gets annoying flying around the same places when you have nothing else to do. I have been able to learn a lot about how things work and mostly how they make the medicine they use here. So I think I can find out how it’s made, or at least where it’s made.” I explained to her as she walked into the room I slept in, then looked around and floppeddown onmy bed. “I found where I’m sleeping, where are you sleeping tonight pervert.” She said with a smile.
“Where you’re laying right now, that’s my bed Missy. And can you please stop calling me a pervert my name is Daniel, I told you this already.” I said to her trying to sound serious and in charge. She just looked up at me. “Oh, this bed is so soft I’m going to miss sleeping here it sucks we are going to be leaving soon.” What she said, confused me and before I asked anything, she threw a small piece of paper through the air at me. “He’s the one that had the idea to do this. He told me in person where to get the packages and when they would be dropped off. He even told me how long to wait and where to hide so no one would find me out.”
I caught the paper and slowly flipped it over to see the image on it. I was shocked and left speechless when I saw it. It was the leader of the forger city and Adam. I looked up to her about to ask her who was the one she meant. “It was the two of them, the tall one I think his name was Adam, he was always with the other one to keep him safe; Adam held the packages for me and the other one was the one running everything.” My best friend and the leader of the city my father left behind were the ones doing this. My mind filled with disappointment and anger, I understood now what she meant when she said we would be leaving soon.
I looked at her laying there deep in thought. “Get some rest you’re going to need it, we leave tomorrow. I am going to need a way to stop this drug, but for now, I don’t have the skill needed. However, I do know where we can go to get the skills I need to counter this drug. I’m going to find where they make it and take as much as I can and destroy the rest of it. Then we will make a break for it, I will need to say goodbye to this city for a while.”
I vanished from the room, leaving her in bed, I appeared on the tallest building in the city, I sat down. “I was meant to protect this city wasn’t I, how can I protect it now when they are the ones that are doing the things that I try to protect others from.” I said to myself. I got lost in my thoughts, trying to figure out what I would do next. All I could think was it was time to move on until I had the strength to do something else besides just destroy a bunch of bottles in a lab.
I sat there the rest of the night until the sun began to stretch its rays over the horizon, it was my last sunrise here, and now it was time to go. I looked down, the city below me was still dark and it would stay that way for about two more minutes. I vanished appearing in my room, she was there waiting on my bed with a bag and my coat in her hand. “Let’s go, we have a lot to see, well we have a lot that you are going to show me.” She said with a smile as she stood to her feet.
I pick up the piece of paper that she threw at me yesterday and I wrote on the back. “Thanks for the carrier I think I’ll call it a Plan from now on. Oh, before I forget, you should close the lab.”
“Get to the launch area I have something to take care of first.” I said to her and vanished with the bag and my coat. She walked out of the building and vanished. I appeared in the lab where the Shadow was made then I went nuts. I let out all of my anger all at once destroying the lab in seconds, then I just picked up my bag, filled it with the small bottles that were left unbroken. Then I vanished.
“Are you ready to go, it’s going to be a very long flight to where we are going.” I said to her getting into the plane with her. She looked at me and asked one question. “Can you move up some pervert I’m still sleepy, and I want to sleep.”
I laughed as I pulled out the auto polite and threw it out of the plane and then hit the launch button, switching the main engines on at the same time.
